Crunch.

Not doing much of anything, except for reading and writing. Normally, those things keep me happy, but with the loss of Crunch, everything is just blah.

My smart, funny buddy died this past Saturday night. He was 4 months shy of his 16th birthday.

He'd been losing weight a bit over the years, but nothing drastic - it comes with aging. But within a week, he got really dehydrated, and was drinking a lot of water. Even then, he was still playing, jumping up on stuff, eating, etc.

On Thursday, he didn't eat and was listless. I took him to the vet on Friday. They gave him a bunch of injections so that he'd be able to eat without difficulty, plus a cutaneous fluid injection and a vitamin B-12 shot...he was pretty alert when I got him home, but he still wouldn't eat (And I tried everything: his fave foods, hand-feeding him...nothing).

He was worse on Saturday. After talking to the vet back and forth, I discovered that all of the shit that they gave him only lasted for a 24-hour period. I had to keep it together and not blow a gasket. It's like - why have me spend $175 for something temporary, that didn't even work? I could have spent the $200 to put Crunch to sleep...at least he wouldn't have had to suffer like he did Saturday night...

When I was able to talk without falling apart, I called the vet just this Tuesday, and chewed them out. As broke as I usually am, it wasn't about the goddamn money.

When Crunch died, I was laying on the floor with him. When he reached out one of his paws to touch my face, I just fell apart. After a few more horrible spasms, he died.

(Crap - now I'm crying again).

My remaining three cats don't seem to be affected by Crunch's absence. I once read somewhere that cats know when another is near death, and for them, the dying cat no longer exist, ie, he/she has already gone. When I mention his name, they all stare at me though, and I'll get one or two meows...

*HUGS* I'm sorry for your loss. :(

We had to euthanize my 17 year old cat, Angel this past Wednesday because of how much she'd been suffering for the past couple of months; so I know how you feel right now, and I'm here if you want to talk.

I had to watch my last two suffer because I couldn't afford to have them put to sleep. That was horrible. I never want to go through that again.
